At carnival time, a sumptuous historic re-enactment brings Madonna di Campiglio back in time to the late 1800s, when Empress Elisabeth of Austria (affectionately known as ‘Sissi’) and her husband Franz Joseph I visited the Dolomites. The main summer event takes place on 18th August, the Empress’s birthday.
The Habsburg Carnival is the ultimate carnival experience in the region. A magical and amazing occasion where you’ll feel like you’re living at court, surrounded by princes and princesses, more than a hundred years ago.

The Empress and Campiglio: love at first sight
It is widely documented that Sissi was overwhelmed by Madonna di Campiglio’s glory. This is why the local population has been celebrating her.
The Habsburg court arrives in Campiglio
The celebrations start in the main square, where characters in period costumes enter hailed by a rejoicing crowd toasting with mulled wine.

An evocative moonlight descent down snow-covered slopes to the tune of the best-known Viennese waltzes.
Emperor's Grand Ball
Waltz around with your partner in the heritage Hofer hall at the Hotel Des Alpes, wearing original period costumes.
